Pritker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano is not only designing the anticipated Eighty Seven Park condo tower in Miami Beach, he is also a lover of sandcastles. Piano believes that making something as temporary and useless as a sandcastle teaches you a lot about the responsibility of making something that will remain for centuries.
Piano stated, "It's quite nice because it's about capturing a moment when the water comes. And, of course, it's also about the old story of the relationship between manmade and nature. I love nature immensely, but at the end of the day, the architect's job is to compete with nature. It's actually to make buildings. And if you are not clever, things don't stay up."
Piano has built some of the most renowned buildings of modern times. His portfolio includes the Shard skyscraper in London, the new Whitney Museum in New York City and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He is currently working on the 16-story 87 Park tower in Miami Beach. With a beachfront park bordering the ultra-exclusive development to the south, residents will have plenty of room to refine their sandcastle-building skills.
Piano's tips include:
- Be aware that your sandcastle is going to disappear. Then, study the waves.
- Dig a small ditch where the waves have made the sand wet. Build the sand behind the ditch up at a 45-degree incline to create the mass of the castle.
- Make an opening for the ocean in the ditch. The waves will come up and create a moat.
- Put a flag or anything visible on the castle. Finally, go home and don't look back.
