A special election is being held this November to decide if a section of Northeast Miami-Dade could become its own city. If residents vote in favor, the section of land with more than $1 billion in real estate between Aventura and North Miami Beach would be authorized to exit from the county's municipal services and taxing structure.
According to the Miami Herald, Miami-Dade commissioners approved the special election on Tuesday, allowing the 20,000 residents of Highland Lakes, Skylake and the previously incorporated Ojus, a say in the outcome. While there is currently no official name for the area, if voters in the proposed municipality vote yes, the area would become Miami-Dade's 35th city.
Neighbors are divided on the vote. Some residents are worried their property taxes would rise if the city is approved. The area is currently a part of Miami-Dade’s massive “unincorporated” services area. That area is home to over a million people and they currently pay some of the lowest tax rates in the county. Critics are also concerned the smaller city government could result in increased development and zoning changes with less regulation and oversight. Advocates, however, think it would be better if Miami-Dade County got out of the city-services game and focused more on countywide issues.
