Miami will be Home to the Largest and Most Expensive Mall in the Nation

June 25, 2018

It has been said the days of the shopping mall are over. Yet, while brick and mortar shopping centers are struggling to stay open, the developers of American Dream Miami are moving forward with their plans to build the nation’s largest and most expensive megamall to South Florida.

American Dream Miami should not be considered your average shopping mall or even megamall. The 174-acre site will have more in common with a theme park than a traditional shopping center. According to the developers, that’s exactly the point. Layouts for the space have set aside 1.5 of its 5 million square feet for retail space, while a whopping 3.5 million square feet has been allocated for entertainment attractions including multiple indoor roller coasters, an artificial ski slope, skating rink, water park, fishing hole, performing arts center and even a lagoon offering submarine rides.

The massive $4 billion concept comes from Triple Five Group, the same developers responsible for Minnesota’s Mall of America, which held the title of the largest mall in the world when it opened 35 years ago. The group is also behind an upcoming New Jersey retail and entertainment complex called American Dream Meadowlands.

While American Dream Miami hopes to attract 30 million visitors annually, the project has its fair share of critics and doubters. Many members of the public aren’t entirely buying the promise that the American Dream won’t rely on taxpayer money. The development team also still needs to complete environmental permitting before any kind of construction can begin. If it succeeds, however, it could transform how future malls are built in the era of e-commerce.
